‘GMA’ anchor Robin Roberts marries Amber Laign

Wedding bells have finally rung for Robin Roberts.

The “Good Morning America” anchor, 62, officially tied the knot with her partner, former massage therapist Amber Laign, 48, on Friday. The pair have been together for nearly two decades.

News the couple had tied the knot came after a photo of the pair’s dog in a bow tie was posted on Instagram revealing his moms had married.

“My mommies are MARRIED,” read the post. “Married?……yes….married!!!

Roberts first revealed her wedding plans in January, when she posted a clip of a conversation she had with motivational speaker and author Gabby Bernstein.

“I’m hesitating because I haven’t said it out loud yet…I’m saying ‘yes’ to marriage,” Roberts said in the clip. “We’re getting married this year. It was something we had talked about, but we had put it off. She became ill, but it is saying ‘yes’ to that and that next chapter.”

The journalist began fanning herself with her note cards during the January “GMA” broadcast.

“I can’t believe I said that,” she joked about divulging her “next chapter” with Laign.

Roberts and Laign met in 2005, when mutual friends set them up on a blind date. However, Roberts, who is also a breast cancer survivor, didn’t publicly come out as gay until 2013. She has revealed that she was afraid to interview former President Obama about LGBTQ rights in 2012, for fear of being outed.

In her 2013 Facebook post coming out, she thanked Amber for helping her, amid her own cancer battle.

“I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,” Roberts wrote. “I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold.”

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the couple, since Laign was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, and had chemotherapy complications in April 2022.

“Sweet Amber completing radiation, a very important phase of her treatment!” Roberts wrote in an Instagram post in July 2022. “We both thank you for all your well wishes and prayers. Proud of her and all fellow Thrivers for your grit and grace during a challenging time.”

“It can either tear you apart or bring you closer together, and thank the good Lord, it brought us closer together,” Roberts told “GMA” of the health obstacles they’ve faced together.

She continued: “We are partners. We will do whatever it takes, and I think that the illnesses that we have gone through, and are going through, have only strengthened us and made us more compassionate with each other and have a better understanding of each other.”

The couple decided to get married in 2022, while dining at a restaurant in Connecticut, where they put rings of calamari on each other’s fingers.

“We took the calamari rings and we slapped them on each other’s fingers and we just we proposed to one another,” Roberts said on her morning show.

“Now looking back, it was pretty fitting for us to not have a down on one knee [proposal] and one person doing it and who was going to propose,” she added. “It was just us hanging out in our little hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot and putting calamari rings on each other and saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.'”

They had a bachelorette bash on-air earlier this month. Roberts’ ABC colleagues and fellow news pals — including Diane Sawyer, Lara Spencer, Michael Strahan, George Stephanopolous, Deborah Roberts, Gayle King and her retired news anchor sister Sally-Ann — were all in attendance.

Emmy-nominated actress Niecy Nash co-hosted the party, Carla Hall made mocktail spicy margaritas and espresso martinis, and En Vogue performed a medley of their hits. The party ended with “GMA” weekend anchor Gio Benitez’s husband, TV personality Tommy DiDario, jumping out of a cake.

As for their wedding dresses, Roberts and Laign met on-camera with designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka and shared sketches of some classic gowns.

But their final choices for the big day were a surprise.

“I want us to each see each other in the final dress for the first time on the wedding,” Roberts explained at the time.

Laign told viewers, “The wedding is the feeling of an enchanted garden” and said their colors are “white, blush, pink, a little bit of green,” calling the vibes “ethereal.”
