Janice Gin Named KITV News Director

The 27-year news executive succeeds Mike Darrah as head of journalism at SJL Broadcasting’s ABC affiliate in Honolulu.

Veteran news manager Janice Gin is joining SJL Broadcasting’s ABC affiliate KITV Honolulu (DMA 66) as news director effective Jan. 7. She succeeds Mike Darrah, whose final day at KITV was Dec 19 and who is joining KNTV Las Vegas.

Gin has 27 years of management and executive producing experience. She has won numerous awards including multiple Emmy honors for breaking news coverage and station excellence.

She comes to KITV from KRON San Francisco where she has been assistant news director for more than five years. “I am so excited to be part of a local news team that understands the importance of community and is committed to good journalism”, said Gin, who was also associate news director for KTVU Oakland, Calif., for 13 years.

She also served as executive producer at KGO San Francisco from 1997 until 2000.

Gin was managing editor and executive producer for KPNX Phoenix and served as executive producer of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games for Gannett Broadcasting.  She also was executive produce for WFMYn Greensboro, N.C.

She was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, San Francisco Chapter, and a member of the Radio Television Digital News Association Foundation board of directors.  She was president of the Northern California Radio Television News Directors Association. In addition, she served as a visiting lecturer at The Poynter Institute.

Gin is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and holds a master’s degree in journalism and public affairs from The American University in Washington. She also holds a degree in communication studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
