KIRO’s Steve Raible To Retire After Nearly 38 Years

During Wednesday’s 6 p.m. newscast, KIRO Seattle evening news anchor Steve Raible announced his plans to retire in late spring.

“We talked about this a few months ago … stepping back to spend more time with my bride, Sharon. Tonight we make it official — announcing our retirement from KIRO 7,” Raible announced to viewers. “We will still have some time together. I will not be retiring until the late spring. You have trusted me to be a part of a remarkable team of journalists, photographers, and news managers for more than three decades. Thank you for that trust. And thank you for inviting me into your home.”

Over the coming months, Cox Media Group’s KIRO plans to pay tribute to Raible. Those plans include: highlights of important moments from his nearly 38 years with KIRO distributed across all station platforms; special community events and celebrations; and opportunities for viewers to share personal messages and well-wishes for the region’s most experienced anchor.

Raible will continue in his role with the Seahawks radio broadcast following his retirement from KIRO and will still been seen on the station for special events and programming.

Born and raised in Louisville, KY, Raible was a standout wide receiver at Trinity High School and went on to play college football for Georgia Tech.

An original member of the expansion Seattle Seahawks, Raible was a second-round selection in the 1976 NFL draft (59th overall). He played wide receiver for six seasons, from 1976 to 1981, all under head coach Jack Patera.

In his final season, Raible suffered a collapsed lung in the second preseason game and did not play again for nearly two months. He dropped on the depth chart and caught just one pass during the 1981 season. While preparing for his seventh NFL season, Raible was offered an opportunity in June 1982 to be the color analyst for the Seahawks radio broadcasts alongside Pete Gross. After weighing the offer with his wife, Raible decided to retire from football and begin his new career in broadcasting. Shortly after accepting the color analyst position for the Seahawks, he also joined KIRO as the co-host of PM Magazine and fill-in sports reporter.

In his nearly 38-year television career Raible has been consistently recognized for his excellence in broadcasting, including five Regional Emmy Awards — two for Best Anchor — to go along with several national awards. Raible has reported stories from Tokyo to Moscow and has covered Olympic Games and presidential campaigns. In 2010, he was a Silver Circle Inductee by the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and in 2015 he was the only television journalist in the Seattle market invited for an exclusive interview with then-President Barack Obama.

Raible received the 2015 Keith Jackson Award at the Seattle Sports Commission Sports Star of the Year Awards and in 2019 was inducted in to the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.
