KNBC’s Beverly White Honored By NABJ

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) selected Beverly White, KNBC Los Angeles’ veteran general assignment reporter, as the recipient of the NABJ’s 2018 Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award.

White was honored at the organization’s annual Salute to Excellence Awards gala on Saturday, Aug. 4 in Detroit.

An accomplished journalist with a career that spans nearly 40 years, White has covered local and national breaking news stories for NBC4 since 1992, including the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the salon mass murders in Seal Beach and countless breaking news stories throughout Southern California.

“We are so proud of all that Bev has accomplished and the great value she provides to our viewers on a daily basis,” said Steve Carlston, president-GM of KNBC4 Southern California.  “We are all honored to be her teammate and congratulate her for a stellar career.”

Earlier this month, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recognized White for her distinguished career as a journalist.  She was also honored by NABJ’s Los Angeles chapter, where she was past chapter president, in 2017 for her 25 years with NBC4.  In 2017, White received the Leadership Award from the Journalism Honor Society at California State University, Northridge.  Additionally, she is the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Journalist Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the 2008 California Legislative Black Caucus Leadership Award.

“Beverly is an industry legend who has been reporting impactful and breakthrough stories for more than two decades,” said Todd Mokhtari, KNBC VP of news. “She is a powerful presence that has set the standard for all journalists that follow.”

Prior to joining KNBC, White was a reporter at WTVJ Miami-Fort Lauderdale where she was on the 1992 Peabody Award-winning team that covered Hurricane Andrew.  Prior to that, she anchored the morning weekday newscast for WKRC Cincinnati.  White began her career in her home state of Texas at KCEN Temple-Waco, and KENS San Antonio.

“I’m thrilled to receive the 2018 Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award from the NABJ, named for the late Philadelphia Daily News columnist, former Tuskegee Airman, educator and NABJ co-founder,” said White. “Stone was a legend for speaking truth to power and breaking down barriers for Black journalists. In my early years with NABJ, I was honored to be in his presence many times before his death in 2014.  Whatever career success I have is due in large part to NABJ for connecting me with inspiring professionals, unstoppable students and lifelong friends.”

White has also been a part of the fabric of the philanthropic community in the Southland for the past 25 years, supporting dozens of causes benefitting women, children in need and education, to name a few.  She also participates in KNBC’s signature community initiatives Clear the Shelters to raise awareness about pet adoptions, and the need to provide school supplies for under-served communities in the market through the station’s annual Supporting Our Schools campaign.  She is also a staple every year at the Kingdom Day Parade celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy.

White earned a broadcast journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
