After more than 20 years in broadcasting, award-winning WFTV morning news anchor Nancy Alvarez is transitioning to a brand-new role off the air: senior vice president of Community Relations and Equity Impact at Heart of Florida United Way. Alvarez’s last day on WFTV will be Nov. 24.

“Over the years, as I covered some of our toughest moments, I always noticed Heart of Florida United Way was there shining a light and helping lift our neighbors.” Alvarez said in a news release, adding, “I’m grateful for this opportunity to join a team focused on empowering our diverse and rapidly growing community.”

In her new role at the Heart of Florida United Way, Alvarez will continue her work as a highly visible member of the community, serving as a liaison to key population segments, promoting community engagement and action, raising the visibility of the impact of Heart of Florida United Way and facilitating community conversations on critical issues affecting Central Florida.

In a statement, Paul Briggs, vice president and general manager of WFTV, wished Alvarez well in her new endeavor, saying, “While we will miss Nancy on our airwaves, we look forward to this new chapter with Heart of Florida United Way and the integral role she will have in serving our Central Florida community.”

Alvarez said on air that this change was partially prompted by the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, as she felt “called to meet this moment” while the Central Florida community grapples with the ongoing mental health crisis, unaffordable housing, education inequality and more. Alvarez also invited longtime viewers to follow her on social media, adding that she “will continue to be a source of information and optimism for you.”

Replacing Alvarez on Channel 9 Eyewitness News This Morning will be Kirstin Delgado, who comes to WFTV from WINK-TV in Ft. Myers, where she was an anchor and reporter. Delagado will begin anchoring on Nov. 29.
