Social Media Excellence At NewsTECHForum
TVNewsCheck will present its inaugural Social Media Excellence Awards at December’s NewsTECHForum, honoring broadcasters’ exceptional innovation, creativity and audience engagement on Facebook.
This year’s recipient of the Innovator Award, which honors the most remarkable achievement on the platform by an individual, news brand or station group, will be presented to Josh Johnson, chief meteorologist at Raycom-owned WSFA Montgomery, Ala. Johnson was singled out from among 30 nominees for his creative use of Facebook Live and Google Maps to help people who had been evacuated for Hurricane Michael to see if it appeared their homes had been damaged.
The Large Market Award will be presented to Fox Owned Television Stations’ WTVT Tampa, Fla., which was recognized for its exceptional range of bespoke local content for Facebook. Hearst-owned KCCI Des Moines, Iowa, will receive the Small-Medium Market Award for its strong local Facebook content and engaging multiplatform approach.
Kristen Hampton of Raycom-owned WBTV Charlotte, N.C., will receive the Talent Award for her humorous and authentic Facebook videos, which have cultivated an enormous following there.
The Social Media Excellence Awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at TVNewsCheck’s NewsTECHForum. After accepting their awards, winners will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Kim Wilson, president and founder of Social News Desk, the presenting data partner for the awards.
Winners were selected by a panel of judges from an initial pool of nominees culled from Social News Desk’s live database of 12,000 local news Facebook pages. Social News Desk calculated 15 million posts by those pages and identified those with the highest engagement per post as nominees in the awards’ four categories.
The sixth annual NewsTECHForum, set for Dec. 10-11 at the New York Hilton, will bring together engineering, news, production and digital leaders to discuss excellence in news storytelling and news workflow.
NewsTECHForum is co-located with the SportsVideoGroup Summit, which gathers nearly 2,000 sports technologists and production managers to talk about excellence in sports production. The Summit features a technology showcase, open to NewsTECHForum attendees, of more than 75 companies.
