Telemundo’s WNJU Announces New Dual Anchor/Investigative Reporter, Introduces New Anchor Lineups

Telemundo’s WNJU New York (Telemundo 47) has named an anchor/investigative reporter and introduced a new anchor lineup for some of its newscasts, starting in late April.  These changes include the elevation of three of its journalists into new station roles, as well as the addition of an Edward R. Murrow Award-winning news anchor from the Telemundo Station Group family.

Freddy Oldenburg, WNJU vice president of news, said: “With our station’s newscasts continuing to grow in viewership both on-air and on-line, this is the right time to turn to these trusted journalists for these prominent roles. They will deliver the quality journalism that our viewers have come to expect from Telemundo 47.

“They also know the important role that our station plays in the community, and I know that our viewers will respond to their human approach, genuine concern for our families and deep passion for the neighborhoods we all live and work in.”

WNJU news anchor David Rodríguez becomes the new chief of Telemundo 47 Investiga when the unit relaunches in late April. Rodríguez will move into this new role while continuing to anchor the station’s 5 and 5:30 p.m. weekday newscasts.

A native of Carolina, P.R., Rodríguez is the winner of 16 local Emmy Awards, including three in the past year for coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alejandro Mendoza is a new addition, joining from Telemundo sister station KTMD Houston where he anchored the evening news. Mendoza will join Darling Burdiez as the next co-anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. weekday editions of Noticiero 47 Telemundo. He joins the station April 18. A native of Mexico, Mendoza has been honored an Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. He has worked at stations in Mexico, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston over nearly two decades in television news.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Weekday and Weekend Anchor Changes

Rosarina Bretón will be moving from weekends to weekdays, joining David Rodríguez as co-anchor of the 5 and 5:30 p.m. daily newscasts. She joined Telemundo 47 in 2018 and was recently awarded a local Emmy for her coverage of the January, 2020 earthquake outside Ponce, Puerto Rico. Bretón emigrated to Washington Heights from the Dominican Republic with her family when she was 10 years old.

Filling Bretón’s weekend role on an interim basis is Cristina Navarrete, Telemundo 47’s general assignment nightside reporter and a regular fill-in anchor for the weekend newscasts. Navarrete joined Telemundo 47 in 2016 and was recognized with the Emmy for top New York news reporter in 2021, one of two Emmys awarded to Navarrete since joining the station. Navarrete is Mexican American and a first-generation American citizen.

News anchor lineups for Noticiero 47 Telemundo Primera Edición (early morning) and Noticiero 47 Telemundo Mediodía (midday) remain unchanged.
