TVNewsCheck To Host Reporting On Protest: Lessons From The Field Webinar

The killing of George Floyd galvanized protests against racial injustice across the U.S. and the world, compelling broadcast journalists to join them in the streets to capture the fast-evolving story. Reporting on Protest: Lessons from the Front Lines, a TVNewsCheck Working Lunch webinar on June 30 at 1 p.m. ET, will tap into how broadcasters have met the challenges of this coverage amid coronavirus concerns and new threats to journalists’ safety.

Bryan Llenas, Fox News’ national correspondent; Christina Gonzalez, veteran KTTV Los Angeles reporter; and Sarah Matthews, staff attorney with Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press will join TVNewsCheck Editor Michael Depp in an hour-long conversation tackling the protest coverage’s complexities. Those include negotiating politics, race and personal safety as journalists attempt to capture a pivotal American moment.

Speakers will share practical tips for protest coverage including optimizing personal safety in the field, reporters’ rights and best practices in volatile encounters with law enforcement and conduct guidance they’re getting from their news organizations.

They’ll also examine their professional responsibilities in this historic moment and the ways in which it is compelling a reexamination of race’s role in their reporting.

Bryan Llenas

Bryan Llenas Llenas is Fox News Channel’s national correspondent. He joined the network in 2010 and transitioned to an on-air correspondent in 2013. While at the network, Llenas has covered a number of the nation’s top stories, including several natural disasters such as Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. Llenas also reported live on the ground from Puerto Rico during the historic political protests in 2019.

Christina Gonzalez

Christina Gonzalez is a reporter with Fox Owned Stations’ KTTV Los Angeles. She joined the station in 1990 after working at Univision and was the first reporter to cross over from Spanish to English television. She is a veteran of protest and conflict reporting as was injured by police in her coverage during the May Day protests in 2007. Gonzalez has won multiple Emmys and Golden Mikes for coverage, including work in Central America, Bosnia and Africa.

Sarah Matthews

Sarah Matthews is a staff attorney with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. She focuses on providing intake support to First Look Media’s Press Freedom Defense Fund. She litigates cases, drafts amicus briefs, provides pre-publication assistance to journalists and oversees the publication of and updates to the Reporters Committee’s legal guides. She also helps supervise the Reporters Committee’s hotline for journalists and serves on the advisory committees of the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker and the Red Press Initiative. In addition, she teaches media law at American University’s School of Communication.
