CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sean McGarvy is the new news director at ABC affiliate WEWS Channel 5, effective Aug. 27.
Steve Weinstein, the station's vice president and general manager, made the announcement to his staff Friday afternoon.
McGarvy, 39, comes to Cleveland from from KMGH in Denver, where he was assistant news director.
"Sean will lead our journalists as they champion the people of Northeast Ohio," Weinstein said. "His work with investigative teams in Denver, Indianapolis and Washington, D.C., makes him a great fit for this station, what we stand for and how we serve our news audiences."
McGarvy praised Channel 5's investigative team as one of the best in country. "Here in Cleveland, the 5 On Your Side Investigators are second to none," McGarvy said in a written statement. "I'm honored to help guide that team and our award-winning newsroom for the greater good of northeast Ohio."
McGarvy replaces Jeff Harris, who is now news director at the CBS-owned and -operated WBBM in Chicago.
"Jeff Harris gave notice on June 26 that he was leaving Channel 5, and left two weeks after that," said Weinstein in a phone interview. "Obviously, Chicago is a much bigger television market than Cleveland."
