WNJU Anchor Edgardo del Villar Dies At 51

Edgardo del Villar, news anchor at Telemundo’s WNJU New York, died Dec. 13 following a two-year bout with brain cancer. He was 51 years old.

Del Villar joined WNJU in 2017 after serving as a correspondent and a fill-in anchor for Telemundo network programs Un Nuevo Día and Noticias Telemundo in Miami.

A native of Mexico, Del Villar had a large following in the Mexican community through more than 20 years in journalistic roles in Mexico and the United States. He regularly anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. editions of Noticiero 47 Telemundo with co-anchor Darling Burdiez until this past August, when he departed to focus on his fight with cancer.

Prior to joining Telemundo network in 2013, del Villar served as anchor of Las Noticias, Televisa’s primetime newscast in Monterrey, Mexico for 12 years. He also was a news director and anchor for several radio networks, including MVS, Radio Fórmula and Núcleo Radio Monterrey for more than 10 years.

Del Villar also worked as an adviser to the editorial board of Grupo Reforma, Mexico’s largest newspaper group.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago.
