WUSA Ups Caridad Hernandez To News Content Director

Tegna promotes her from assistant news director to oversee journalism at its CBS affiliate in Washington.

Tegna’s CBS affiliate WUSA Washington has promoted Caridad Hernandez to news content director. She succeeds Kathy Reynolds, who left for WPTV West Palm Beach, Fla., in May and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the news department reporting to Michael Valentine, the station’s vice president and station manager.

Hernandez currently is WUSA’s assistant news director, a role she’s held for the last two years, leading the station’s day-to-day editorial coverage and production of the station’s dayside and evening newscasts. Hernandez also led several recent specials, including the March on Washington, and 1619: The First Africans and the Making of America.

“We are thrilled to promote Cari to this new role leading our entire newsroom,” Valentine said. “Her leadership style fits perfectly with our station’s values. She has already had a tremendous impact in her three years at WUSA9, and we are very fortunate to have her on our team.”

“I am excited and honored to continue to lead the team at WUSA9 in this new role,” Hernandez said. I look forward to continuing to work with an excellent group of journalists who bring out the best in each other and work diligently to tell stories that make an impact in the DC Metro area and beyond.”

Hernandez is a seven-time Emmy award-winning executive producer. In January 2019, she and her team at CBS4 Miami were awarded an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University award for their documentary The Everglades: Where Politics, Money and Race Collide. In addition to her role in Miami, Hernandez has been a producer at WCAU Philadelphia and at CNN in Atlanta.

She is a graduate of Florida International University with a degree in broadcast journalism.
