WXLV Winston-Salem Launching Local News

Sinclair’s ABC affiliate in North Carolina’s Triad is debuting 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on Jan. 18.

Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate WXLV Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point, N.C., will premiere local newscasts on Jan. 18. The newscasts will air weekdays on at 6 and 11 p.m.

“We understand that the Triad community is looking for a fresh perspective on local news,” said WXLV News Director Jake Peterson. “Viewers desire news that is both informative and easy to comprehend — which is why we’ll offer context and perspective with each story.”

WXLV is partnering with its sister stations in the state to bring viewers in the Triad the top stories from across North Carolina. The local and regional reporters will also be contributing to social and digital platforms.

“Our goal is for viewers to learn something new every time they tune in. We have built a staff that advocates for our community, and we hope to hear from each of our viewers as we grow. We are excited to add another local news voice to our community,” said General Manager Allison Aldridge.

The station has hired High Point-native and UNC Greensboro graduate Jonathan Weant to head the weather department. Weant has worked in multiple markets across the East Coast.

I don’t believe this is a Sinclair decision.. I’m pretty sure it’s an ABC decision.
ABC likes for its affiliates to not just clear its news programs, but also program local news.
I personally know of the Greensboro situation that happened with another ABC station that did little to no local news.. what news they did do, did not rate anywhere near the other stations in the DMA.
Out of a clear blue sky, ABC went behind their back and affiliated with the dot-two channel on one of the competing stations.
SPOILER ALERT: The former ABC station elevated one of its other sub-channel networks to primary status and actually boosted its numbers, routinely outpulling its former network ABC on the other station’s dot-2 channel.
Karma.
