NBCLX’s 4-Part Docuseries ‘Dying To Be Wrong,’ Examines Texas City Divided & Devastated By The Pandemic

NBCLX, NBCUniversal Local’s TV and streaming network, today released a four-part docuseries, Dying to be Wrong, detailing the story of a Texas community and its people tragically affected and deeply divided by the COVID-19 pandemic and how misinformation and other issues may have exacerbated the crisis and its devastating impact. The full series of 7- to 12-minute episodes are available now on LX.com, and will be presented on NBCLX’s weekday news program, LX News, today, Monday, Oct. 18, through Thursday, Oct. 21.

NBCLX Storyteller Cody Broadway returned to his hometown of San Angelo — a West Texas city of approximately 100,000 — to speak to the community authorities, public health officials, religious leaders and residents at the center of the crisis, response and tragedy. San Angelo has suffered from comparably high caseloads and death tolls related to COVID-19. In September, cases were growing faster than anywhere else in Texas, and the City of San Angelo/Tom Green County Department of Health has reported 120 COVID-related deaths since the beginning of August.

The subjects featured in Dying to be Wrong share their unique perspectives and reveal how their lives have been affected by the toll the pandemic has taken on their community, including their personal stories of loss and sacrifice. They also reveal how misinformation — along with views on faith, politics, individual liberty and personal responsibility — sowed the deep division that limited the ability to control the spread of the virus and led to more preventable deaths during a recent Delta surge.

Dying to be Wrong also scrutinizes the role of social media in spreading misinformation related to the coronavirus. Several participants in the docuseries cite the false information and conspiracy theories shared on these platforms as a primary cause of widespread skepticism towards science, mistrust of public health officials and resistance to various health and safety measures, including vaccines.

A special Dying to be Wrong podcast series accompanies the docuseries, with the first episode launching today. Broadway shares his personal perspective on the initiative and reflects on his hometown and its struggle with the pandemic. The podcast will also include additional interviews. The first episode is now available for download on all major podcast platforms, including Apple, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn and iHeart.
