WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Dr. Phil’ Back On Top Of The Talkers

Despite being in repeats on all five days, syndication’s top talker leapfrogged over the previous week’s leader, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and finished first for the 191st time in the past 205 weeks in the session ending Aug. 9.

Dr. Phil got a ratings booster shot, taking the show up 6% from the prior appointment to a four-week high 1.9 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, regaining the talk show lead in the session ending Aug. 9. Despite being in repeats on all five days, syndication’s top talker leapfrogged over last week’s leader, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and finished first for the 191st time in the past 205 weeks.

Kelly and Ryan, which had seen its viewing stats skyrocket with widely praised tributes to late co-host Regis Philbin in the previous outing, came back down to earth, relinquishing 16% to a second-place 1.6.

Further back, the beleaguered Ellen DeGeneres remained at its all-time series low 1.0 for a third consecutive week. Maury plunged 9% to a 1.0, matching its series low but still tying Ellen.

Moving up the chart with talk’s biggest increase was popular newcomer Kelly Clarkson, which climbed 14% to a 0.8 in households and 33% in the key women 25-54 demo despite being preempted in several markets by COVID-19 coverage.

Nielsen juggernaut Judge Judy, at a 5.4, and its law partner Hot Bench at a 2.0 were syndication’s two highest rated and most-watched daytime shows for the ninth week in a row, even though both programs aired only encore episodes all week and were peppered with preemptions.

In prime access time periods, the magazine race got a lot tighter as Extra jumped 14% to a 0.8 despite getting hit with a ton of baseball preemptions and landed in a rare three-way tie with TMZ, which eroded 11%, and Daily Mail TV, which also joined the party, rising 14%. Mail will be getting a boost when award-winning former NBC anchor Thomas Roberts joins the show next month as host of season four.
