WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Ellen’ Feasts On Thanksgiving Ratings

The talk show's "12 Days of Givaways" helped drive an 18% boost in household numbers in the session ending Nov. 29, a week that saw many other syndies drop due to holiday, football and political preemptions.

Ellen DeGeneres had plenty for which to be grateful in the Thanksgiving week session ending Nov. 29 as her show unveiled its annual “12 Days Of Giveaways” and saw rating spike 18% from the week before. That gave the program a new season high 1.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, although it was still down 35% from last year at this time.

Most of syndication declined in the frame due to massive holiday, football and political preemptions, but Ellen was one of several strips able to break out and avoid including the low-rated Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday in its average thanks to a coverage loss.

The only other first-run daytime program beside Ellen rolling into record territory for the season was the popular court show Hot Bench, which barreled ahead 6% to a new season high 1.8.

The two talkers outperforming Ellen were Live with Kelly and Ryan, which held steady at a 1.9 to lead the category, and second-place Dr. Phil, which had no breakouts from which to benefit, giving back 10% to a 1.8.

Another bright spot was newcomer Drew Barrymore, which ballooned 50% in the key women 25-54 age group to a 0.3, despite being preempted at least 24 times on Black Friday. That tied Rachel Ray, Tamron Hall and Dr. Oz in the demo.

Judge Judy downticked a minor 2% to a 6.0 but had no trouble being syndication’s No. 1 show overall in the household ratings for the 11th time in the past 15 weeks, and the most watched with more than 8.6 million daily viewers.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In access, both quiz shows and magazines found the going rough. For example, usual top game Family Feud slipped 12% to a 5.0, tying Jeopardy, which tumbled 15% to a 5.0, while Wheel of Fortune faded 13% to a 4.9. Also, newsmag leader Inside Edition eroded 15% to a 2.2.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, unchanged from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.7, unchanged)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.6, +20%)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.4, unchanged), tied with Maury (0.4, -20%), Wendy Williams (0.4, unchanged) and Steve Wilkos (0.4, unchanged)
  • Drew Barrymore (0.3, +50%), tied with Tamron Hall (0.3, unchanged), Rachel Ray (0.3 unchanged) and Dr. Oz (0.3, unchanged)

Despite of all the mess behind the scene, Ellen is always an enjoyment show, full of laugh and positive energy for me. I have never enjoy any show more than this.
