‘ET’ Starts Off The New Year With A Bang

Now in its 42nd season, ET was the biggest winner in the hottest category in the week ending Jan. 8 with a 21% weekly leap to a new season high 2.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating and a 33% spike in the key women 25-54 demo, to a magazine-best 0.8.

Entertainment and news magazines stole the syndication spotlight in the first full week of 2023, the session ending Jan. 8, with Entertainment Tonight in the starring role.

Now in its 42nd season, ET was the biggest winner in the hottest category with a 21% weekly leap to a new season high 2.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating and a 33% spike in the key women 25-54 demo, to a magazine best 0.8.

Other double-digit pops in household rating performances included 14% gains for Inside Edition and Access Hollywood; a 17% surge for TMZ; and 20% explosive growth for Extra.

Elsewhere, game shows Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune turned positive after recent losses with 12% and 13% increases, respectively.

In daytime, Live with Kelly and Ryan again torpedoed the talk shows, finishing first for a 33rd straight week with a steady 1.6.

Dr. Phil rallied 8% to a second-place 1.3.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

The top two talk show newcomers — Jennifer Hudson and Sherri — remained neck and neck in the ratings race for a third straight week, with both scoring a solid 0.6 and both recently earning early renewals.

Karamo was also in the hunt, maintaining its season high 0.4.

Taking top billing in daytime overall, was the Hon. Judge Judy, which jumped 5% to a 7-week high 4.4 and crushed the court show category for 1,372nd week in a row.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.6, unchanged from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.5, +25%)
  • Sherri (0.4, unchanged)
