Whether on streaming platforms or in busy innovation labs, TV station groups are experimenting like never before with their most important genre: the newscast. Executives on the vanguard will screen examples of their more progressive work and discuss the strategies and processes behind it in a panel, Fresh Approaches to the News Franchise, at TVNewsCheck’s Programming Everywhere: The Content Event for Linear, Streaming and Syndication, at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 16.

Kate O’Brian, president, Scripps News; Chad Cross, VP content development, CBS News and Stations; Ozzie Martinez, EVP of news, original programming and standards, Telemundo Station Group, NBCUniversal Local; Jamie Grey, managing editor of investigations, InvestigateTV, Gray Television; and Rick Weiss, director of SciLine, will join moderator Michael Depp, chief content officer, NewsCheckMedia and TVNewsCheck editor, for the 1:15 p.m. discussion.

“News organizations are very keen to move beyond the era of ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ and towards greater relevance and trust with their viewers, who are now scattered across many platforms” Depp said. “This discussion will focus on organizations building exciting alternatives to the conventional newscast, drawing on core strengths like investigative reporting to create content with a long tail, wide cross-market resonance and strong appeal to younger viewers.

“Kate, Chad, Ozzie, Jamie and Rick will each be bringing examples of recent work that illustrate the leaps they’re taking, and we’ll be diving into how and why that work came together, along with how it has played out with sought-after younger audiences,” he said.

Programming Everywhere gathers industry leaders to talk about the evolving business of content creation and distribution, with a focus on new development, reinventing local and national news and extending media brands on streaming.

TV station group senior executives will join programming, news and marketing leaders, syndicated programming executives and streaming media and technology leaders to take on issues such as the changing economics of syndicated programming, the relationship between FAST channels and the evolution of broadcasting, transforming television news and strategies for creating a programming everywhere business.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Participants will also consider their No. 1 challenge: creating more content for a multimedia audience, and how technologies like artificial intelligence, the cloud and IP production platforms can free up creative talent while streamlining costs.

Panels include FAST Channels and the Evolution of Broadcasting; Syndication’s Changing Business Model; Rethinking Genres: Games, Travel, Talk and More; Mining the Archives for New Shows; Strategies for Building A Content Everywhere Business; and In Conversation: Anthony Zuiker on Creating new Shows That Break the Mold.
