‘Family Feud’ Shines In Middle Of July
Magazines were the hot performers in the otherwise tepid summer session ending July 19, and the only category in which every one of the strips was steady to higher.
Shrugging off syndication’s lowest viewing levels in 10 months as well as sporadic preemptions for news coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, Access Hollywood was the biggest gainer, jumping 9% from the week before and 20% from two weeks ago to a 1.2 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating. In the coveted women 25-54 demo, the show also grew 20%.
The other big winner was Entertainment Tonight, which rose 4% to a three-week high 2.4 in households and 13% among women 25-54 to a first-place 0.9.
Sister show Inside Edition maintained a slight edge in households over ET with a steady 2.5.
Also worthy of note, TMZ, Extra and Daily Mail TV all held their ground despite preemptions at 1.0, 0.8 and 0.8, respectively.
Elsewhere, all of the talk shows were flat to down except for newcomer Tamron Hall, which climbed 14% to a three-week high 0.8, tying veterans Rachel Ray and Wendy Williams even though Hall aired encore episodes on four of the five days and lost its primary run in several big markets due to coronavirus coverage.
As to the rest of the talkers, Dr. Phil slipped 10% to a 1.8 but still topped the category for the fifth week in a row. Live with Kelly and Ryan was close behind with a steady 1.6. Ellen DeGeneres and Maury remained tied with both unchanged at a 1.1, while Steve Wilkos weakened 10% to a 0.9.
The court show dynamic duo of Judge Judy and Hot Bench continued to lead all daytime programs for the sixth week in a row with Judy easing 3% to a 5.6 and Bench hanging tough at a 2.0.
The No. 1 show in all of first run remained Family Feud with a 5.8, down 2% from the previous frame.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.7, unchanged from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.6, -14%), tied with Maury (0.6, unchanged)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, unchanged)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
