WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Jeopardy’ Scores With Joe Buck On The Mound

The first week of his guest host stint drives the game show up 16% from the week before to a 5.2, the show’s best performance since the week ending May 16.

Sportscaster Joe Buck, the last in the long line of guest hosts trying out this season on Jeopardy, had the right answer in the session ending Aug. 15, sending the embattled game show to its highest rating in 13 weeks.

Jeopardy’s live-plus-same-day national Nielsens with Buck calling the game ballooned 16% from the week before to a 5.2, the show’s best performance since the week ending May 16.

Compared to the same week one year ago, Buck brought Jeopardy up 18% and came close to catching category and overall syndication leader Family Feud, which edged up 6% to a 5.4.

Although the frame was beset by preemptions for coverage of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resignation announcement on Aug. 10, and baseball’s Field of Dreams Game on Aug 12, three of the major entertainment magazines scored double-digit increases in what was the first week of three without Olympics competition.

Entertainment Tonight shot up 24% to an 11-week high 2.1; Access Hollywood hit the jackpot, skyrocketing 100% to a 0.8; and Extra enjoyed a ratings bonanza, surging 20% to a 0.6 with more than 840,000 daily viewers.

In daytime, encore episodes of Kelly Clarkson came back from the Olympics weeks with a vengeance, vaulting 100% to a 0.8 and nearly 1.2 million daily viewers.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Ellen DeGeneres also hit a daily double, rebounding 100% from depressed Olympics levels to a 0.8.

Live with Kelly and Ryan continued to rock the yak pack, rallying 6% week to week and growing 13% year to year to a first-place 1.7, its 14th straight win in the talk show race.

The prognosis for Dr. Phil was also very positive as the show snared second with an 8% advance to a 1.4 despite being in repeats all week.

Among gavelers, Judge Judy and Hot Bench each barreled ahead 7% to a 4.6 and a 1.5, respectively. Judy was syndication’s third highest rated show overall, topping the courts for the 1,299th week in a row — or every week for the past quarter century.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.6, +17% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.5, +25%)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.4, +100%), tied with Maury (0.4, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.

This entire process of selecting a replacement for Alex Trebek is becoming tedious and painful. Joe Buck supposedly didn’t score well his first time out as host. Let’s hope he’s upped his game since then. I’ve been skeptical of hiring actors to be the Jeopardy host. They always appear to be playing the “role” of a Jeopardy host instead of actually being the host. That was my impression of Mayim Bialik. Let’s hope Joe passes the “woke” test, becomes a hit with the audience and we can move on.
