Low PUTs, Pandemic, Preemptions Plague Syndies
Syndication was stifled in the session ending Aug. 16 by a perfect storm of low summer viewing levels and a plethora of preemptions ranging from coverage of political developments and the pandemic to blackouts for baseball games.
In the closely watched talk show category, Dr. Phil was mostly immune to the carnage, giving back 5% to a still-potent 1.8 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and easily leading the yak pack for the eighth time in nine weeks despite being in repeats on all five days.
Live with Kelly and Ryan came closest to Phil, although it backtracked 6% to a new season low 1.5.
Further back, the long-running Maury was a distant third, remaining at its all-time low 1.0.
Trailing Maury was the embattled Ellen DeGeneres, which sank 10% to a 0.9, the lowest rating in its 17-year history.
Steve Wilkos stayed at its season low 0.9 for a third straight week, tying Ellen.
BRAND CONNECTIONS
The highest rated strips in daytime for a 10th week in a row were the killer court show team of Judge Judy, at a 5.2, and its legal partner, Hot Bench, at a 1.9, even though both aired only reruns all week and were mercilessly preempted
In prime access time periods, programs avoided many of the preemptions that plagued other dayparts. Magazines were mostly steady. Among game shows, Family Feud fell 2% to a still syndication top-rated 5.5; Wheel of Fortune was flat with a season-low 4.7 for a third straight week; and Jeopardy downticked 2% to a new season low 4.4.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.7, unchanged from the week before), tied with Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.7, unchanged)
- Maury (0.5, unchanged)
- Steve Wilkos (0.4, unchanged)
