BBC’s Katy Noland To Receive TVN Tech Honor

TVNewsCheck will present one of its ninth annual Technology Women to Watch Awards to Katy Noland, senior R&D technologist at the BBC.

The award will be presented during the NAB Show on April 9 at 6 p.m. in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Noland’s research focuses on how the human eye processes UHD and HDR video, she has co-authored or published a number of papers on the subject. She also received the 2017 SMPTE Journal Certificate of Merit for her paper on high frame-rate television.

“Katy Noland’s career is in its early years, yet she is already having an impact on the advancement of ultra high definition TV and high dynamic range,” said TVNewsCheck Co-founder and Publisher Kathy Haley. “We are happy to shine a spotlight on her work with the 2019 Technology Women to Watch Award.”

Noland joined BBC Research and Development in 2011. There, she specializes in how the human visual system perceives digital video with applications in video format specification and conversion. Her work has also led her to be deeply involved with development work on the Hybrid Log-Gamma system for high dynamic range.

She graduated from the Tonnmeister course in music and sound recording at the University of Surrey, received an MSc in digital signal processing from Queen Mary University of London and completed a Ph.D. there in automatic analysis of tonal harmony.

TVNewsCheck’s Technology Women to Watch Award recognizes women who show significant promise of advancing their industry technologically. It supports the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation’s Technology Apprenticeship Program, which places graduating engineers, who are women or people of color, in broadcast industry internships.
