WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Inside Edition’ Tops A Resurgent Pack Of Magazines

Many of the top five turned in double-digit advances in the week ending Dec. 5.

Syndicated news magazines made the most news on the ratings chart in the session ending Dec. 5 as the major access shows recovered sharply from season lows and the top five day-and-date programs largely surged by double digits.

Among the biggest magazine show percentage winners were Entertainment Tonight, which tallied a 25% increase from the prior tepid Thanksgiving period to a 2.0 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating with a 33% boost in the key women 25-54 demo, and Extra, which excited viewers with a 20 leap to a season high 0.,6 and a 50% gain in the demo.

In addition, Access Hollywood equaled its best numbers of the season, hitting the scoreboard with a 14% surge to a 0.8 and 33% growth in the demo.

TMZ tacked on 17% to a 0.7. while Inside Edition edged ahead 5% to a 2.2 to top the category.

The gains were especially impressive since they came despite preemption for Thursday Night Football on Fox affiliates and the Pac 12 championship game on ABC stations.

For example, Extra was able to move the ball despite having its primary run blown out in all of the five biggest markets.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Elsewhere, Dr. Phil regained talk supremacy with a 20% jump to a first-place 1.8.

Live with Kelly and Ryan was also red hot, spiking 6% to a season high 1.7.

Not far behind were Ellen DeGeneres and Kelly Clarkson, which both preserved their most powerful ratings of the season at a 1.0 and 0.9, respectively.

The strong performances for the most popular the talkers were achieved even though there were breaking news preemptions on Nov. 29 and Dec. 2 for Biden’s remarks on the omnicron coronavirus variant.

On the other hand, it was prognosis negative for the soon to exit Dr. Oz, which fell 14% from last year at this time to a 0.6. The show was broken out of the ratings on Dec. 2 and 3 due to low coverage after being dropped in Penndylvania and neighboring New York markets as a result of host Memet Oz declaring his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.7, +17% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.6, unchanged)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.4, unchanged), tied with Kelly Clarkson (0.4, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
