WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Jeopardy’ Slips, But Still Takes Syndie’s Top Spot

Running a close second in the week ending Oct. 17 was Family Feud, separated by only two-tenths of a ratings point.

Jeopardy slipped 3% to a 5.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, but still was able to prevail in the overall ratings battle in the session ending Oct.17, despite the unexpected loss of superstar contestant Matt Amodio on Oct. 11. Family Feud made close, climbing 6% to a five-week high 5.5.

Live with Kelly and Ryan with raced ahead 6% to a 1.7 and tied Dr. Phil for first place in talk. In addition, Live was one of the very few talkers showing growth over the same week last year, where it also improved 6%.

Kelly Clarkson made its presence felt, holding 100% of its year-ago ratings and cracking the Top 3 to tie heavy hitter Ellen DeGeneres at a 0.9. Ellen has become an increasingly important factor, ballooning 125% over the past six months and jumping from eighth place since the Olympics to its current No. 3 ranking.

Among the newest talk show entries, sophomore Drew Barrymore held its ground at a 0.5, while rookie Nick Cannon maintained a 0.4.

On the magazine rack, Entertainment Tonight was the only show to move up, growing 5% to a 2.1. ET was also the sole magazine to beat its year-ago numbers, also improving 5%.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

I wish somebody at TVNewsCheck would read all the fine print that comes with Nielsen audience measurement and maybe take a course in statistics. There is always a +/- measurement error stated in Nielsen reports and it’s not zero. Hence, a 6.0 and a 5.7 are too close to declare them different, not like dollars and cents $6 and $5.70 at all, although advertisers pretend the ratings are so precise. When ratings are so tiny, measurement error is still 1 rating point, at least, rendering any rank ordering as guesswork! Just ask the research department at Nielsen sometime about statistical error.
