WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Live’ Tops In Talk, ‘Feud’ Wins Among Games

Hurricane Ida caused numerous news preemptions and electrical failures in the pre-Labor Day session ending Sept. 5, resulting in few advances over the previous week.

Only a handful of syndicated shows were able to overcome the powerful headwinds of Hurricane Ida, which caused numerous news preemptions and electrical failures in the pre-Labor Day session ending Sept. 5.

The only two talk shows breaking into positive territory were mainstay Dr. Phil, which rose 8% from the week before to a 1.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and renewed newcomer Drew Barrymore, which moved up 25% to a 0.5.

Both strips scored even though they were in repeats all five days.

Live with Kelly and Ryan, the No. 1 talker of the 2020-21 season, hung tough at a 1.6 and led the chat pack for a 17th straight week despite airing only repackaged episodes. In addition, Live was the only daytime program to beat its year-ago rating.

Turning to primetime access, Family Feud slipped 2% to a 5.5, but still topped the games. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy each inched up 5% to a 4.5 and a 4.1, respectively.

For the just-ended syndication season (Aug. 29), Feud led all of syndication with a 5.5, the first time Feud has won a syndicated season since local people meters debuted in 1986, Debmar-Mercury said. Feud also was tops among women 25-54 for the season with a 2.0.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Among entertainment magazines, Entertainment Tonight clocked a steady 2.0, followed by Access Hollywood which held at a 0.8, and Extra, which preserved its 0.7 despite a pile of football preemptions.

Extra tied TMZ, which slumped 13%. Further back, Daily Mail TV hosted a 17% slide to a 0.5.

In the overnights, Ellen DeGeneres started its 19th and final season on Monday, Sept. 13, with a 40% increase over last September.

The top talk shows for the week ending Sept. 5 among women 25-54 were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.6, -14% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.5, unchanged)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.4, unchanged), tied with Maury (0.4, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
