‘Family Feud’ Lands Atop The Syndies
Sophomore Kelly Clarkson had the biggest percentage increase among the top-tier talk shows in the session ending May 23, jumping into a tie with the long-running Ellen DeGeneres and Wendy Williams. Of course, the increasingly popular Clarkson will take over Ellen’s more highly viewed time slots on NBCUniversal-owned stations when the storied DeGeneres talker folds in fall 2022.
Clarkson, which was just nominated for six Daytime Emmy Awards, strengthened 13% to a 0.9 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating. DeGeneres declined 10% to its 0.9. However, among total viewers, Clarkson attracted 30,000 more sets of eyeballs than Ellen each day. Wendy Williams was also in the mix with a 0.9 household rating but was down 10% from the prior week.
In a generally sluggish week for most big shows, Live with Kelly and Ryan reigned atop the talkers despite downticking 6% to a 1.7 thanks to the warmer weather. Season-to-date talk leader Live nipped Dr. Phil, which eased 11% to a 1.6.
Family Feud fell 2% although it was first on the overall chart with a 5.5, getting past daytime ratings queen Judge Judy, which was syndication’s second highest program, while crushing the court shows for the 1,287th week in a row.
Further back, Jeopardy, featuring the opening frame of its highly anticipated “Tournament of Champions” event, nevertheless slipped 2% to a 5.1. Right behind, Wheel of Fortune was flat at a 5.0.
The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.7, -13% from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.6, -14%)
- Wendy Williams (0.5, +25%), tied with Maury (0.5, +25%)
- Kelly Clarkson (0.4, unchanged), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (0.4, unchanged) and Tamron Hall (0.4, +33%)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
