What’s Up: At the beginning of this year, NBC decided to launch its own station in Boston on Jan. 1, 2017, when NBC’s current affiliation with WHDH, owned by Ed Ansin’s Sunbeam Television, is due to expire. An NBC memo said that “Mike St. Peter, general Manager of NECN and Telemundo Boston, will lead our new NBC station as president, NBC Boston, NECN and Telemundo Boston.” Unclear is what broadcast channel the new O&O will use. One option is to double up on WNEU (NBC’s Telemundo outlet).
Ansin then took the matter to court, claiming the loss of its NBC affiliation violates its agreement with the network as well as the conditions of Comcast’s acquisition of NBC. He didn’t prevail, with a federal judge ruling on May 16 that the station fell victim to “doing business in a competitive and unsentimental marketplace.”
