ABC Switching Puerto Rico Affiliation

The move to WORA on Nov. 1 will give the network a full-power outlet on the island for the first time.

The ABC Television Network has reached a new affiliation agreement for Telecinco Inc.’s WORA Mayagüez to be the ABC station in Puerto Rico. The station will be branded ABC 5 and will begin operations on Nov. 1. Currently, ABC is seen on low-power WPRU-LP.

The network said the change means that for the first time in the market, ABC programming will be broadcast on a full-power station with full over-the-air coverage of the entire territory, in addition to pay TV platforms.

Viewers in Puerto Rico will be able to enjoy all of the ABC shows, sports, and news in full high definition. As part of the new affiliation, WORA will broadcast the full ABC Television Network programming schedule. The channel will also produce a newscast and an interview show.

“Our goal is to position ABC as a leading network in this market, capturing the audience share it enjoys in other major US television markets,” said Jose Vizcarrondo, president, Telecinco. “ABC has a loyal following in Puerto Rico, and we will grow with wider distribution, high-quality HD network programming, relevant local content and an active presence in the community.”

“We’re very excited to partner with Telecinco,” said John Rouse, SVP, affiliate relations, ABC Television Network. “Their strong commitment to building a strong local station will be great for viewers in Puerto Rico, who will also benefit from ABC’s outstanding programming lineup.”

WORA was founded in 1955 and has broadcast various Spanish-language networks throughout its history. It is currently a Univision affil.

I wonder, will WORA’s local news and syndicated shows be in English as well? I’ve known for years that to get English language networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, etc.) in the territory, the cable and satellite services had to import stations from New York City because every TV station in Puerto Rico broadcast in Spanish!
