Another Strong May Sweep Week For ‘Judy’

The No. 1 courtroom once again leads all syndicated fare in the week ending May 15, growing 3% from the previous frame.

Judge Judy (CTD) continued to preside over all syndicated shows in the week ending May 15, beating top sitcom Two and a Half Men (WBDTD), access games Wheel of Fortune (CTD) and Jeopardy (CTD) and topping the soon-to-conclude Oprah (CTD) for the 10th week in a row.

Court Shows

As syndication passed the midpoint of the May sweeps period, Judy grew 3% to a 6.9, its highest rating in seven weeks, and extended its winning streak among court shows to 765 consecutive weeks. Judge Joe Brown (CTD) held steady at a 2.7 in second place; People’s Court (WBDTD) fell 5% to a 1.8; while Judge Alex (Twentieth) and Divorce Court (Twentieth) each added 6% to a 1.7, which was a new season high for Divorce.

Talk Shows

Top talker Oprah, in her third from final week, inched ahead 4% to a 5.4 and landed in fifth place among all syndicated shows. Dr. Phil (CTD) remained at his three-month high, 3.1, for the second week in a row; Live with Regis and Kelly (Disney-ABC) dropped 4% to a 2.4; Maury (NBCU) was flat at a 2.2; Dr. Oz (Sony) rose 5% to a 2.2; and Ellen DeGeneres (WBDTD) was unchanged at a 2.0.

First-Run Freshmen

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Elsewhere in daytime, Swift Justice with Nancy Grace (CTD) remained far in front of the rookie field with a steady 1.7. Meanwhile, no other freshman was able to break a 1 rating. Nate Berkus (Sony) was far back at an unchanged 0.9, while Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Twentieth), Judge Karen’s Court (Litton) and America’s Court with Judge Ross (Entertainment Studios) were all flat at 0.8, 0.7 and 0.3, respectively.

Slow rollout Access Hollywood Live (NBCU) earned a 0.9 rating/3 share and grew 13% from its year-ago time period average in week three of the sweep. The show also jumped 100% among women 18-49 and 75% among women 25-54 in the metered markets.

Magazine Shows

The nationally rated magazines turned in strong performances following the surprise news of the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Maria Shriver split after 25 years of marriage. Entertainment Tonight (CTD) topped the category with a 5% increase to a 3.9 after seeing a 16% spike to a4.3 on May 10, the day the Schwarzenegger-Shriver story broke. Inside Edition (CTD) added 7% to a 3.0; also moving higher was Extra (WBDTD), which improved 7% to a 1.6 after seeing a 20% increase to a 1.8 on May 10. TMZ (WBDTD) and Access Hollywood (NBCU) held steady at 2.1 and 2.0, respectively; The Insider (CTD) clocked a 1.7, which was even with the prior session, while The Insider Weekend surged 17% — both week to week and year to year — to a 1.4.

Game Shows

Most game shows made a comeback following a down week in the previous frame. Wheel of Fortune (CTD) recovered 5% to a 6.6; Jeopardy (CTD) rebounded 8% to a 5.6; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) tacked on 9% to a 2.4; Who Wants to be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) was flat at a 2.3; and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Twentieth) was up 10% to a 1.1.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Off-net sitcoms were slightly higher for the week, although leader Two and a Half Men declined 2% to a 6.5; Family Guy (Twentieth) edged ahead 2% to a 4.6; My Wife and Kids (Disney-ABC) climbed 3% to a 3.1; George Lopez Show (WBDTD) was also up 3% to a 3.0; while Everybody Loves Raymond (CTD) and Seinfeld (Sony) were unchanged at a 2.6.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Among off-net weekly hours, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBCU) maintained its big lead over the field with an unchanged 4.2. Criminal Minds (CTD) was also unchanged at a 3.2; Bones (Twentieth) ballooned 53% to a new season high 2.9; The Closer (WBDTD) advanced 9% to a 2.5; Monk (NBCU) remained at a 2.4; while Numbers (CTD) slipped 4% to a 2.3.
