Banks Named GM Of Meredith Atlanta Duo

Veteran broadcaster Lyle Banks will oversee CBS affiliate WGCL and independent WPCH beginning today. He succeeds Mark Pimentel, who held the post for two years.

Meredith Corp. today appointed Lyle Banks vice president and general manager of WGCL (CBS) and WPCH (independent), its Atlanta (DMA 9) duopoly, effective immediately. He succeeds Mark Pimentel.

“Lyle is a proven leader who has achieved tremendous success in both news and sales,” said Meredith Local Media Group President Paul Karpowicz. “Lyle is a strategic thinker who isn’t afraid to take chances, and we are looking forward to great things at CBS46 and Peachtree TV under his leadership. He understands what it takes to win.”

Banks has a track record of growing revenue and ratings. As president and general manager at both WMAQ Chicago and WAVY Norfolk, Va., he guided each station to the No. 1 spot in ratings, profit and advertising share in its respective market.

Banks is also a digital innovator, including launching a mobile application for global video newsgathering and developing strategies for increasing digital ad sales.

In addition to his roles at WMAQ and WAVY, Banks held senior positions at KXAS Dallas and KXAN Austin, Texas. Additionally, he was president-CEO of Banks Broadcasting, a joint venture with LIN Media and private equity partners to create more minority-owned-and-operated television stations.

Banks earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. He is also a graduate of the General Electric Executive Development Course (EDC).

AJC says they had their best ratings in years. Wonder what happened behind the scenes.

Pimentel lost his job despite the fact ratings had improved in the most recent November sweeps, making the station competitive with typical third-place station 11Alive, the NBC affiliate, during several time slots.

CBS46’s morning show had been picking up new viewers, especially since former “Good Day Atlanta” host Gurvir Dhindsa joined Amanda Davis at the desk in October. But that momentum is in doubt since Davis passed away from a stroke two weeks ago.
