Belo Expects Retrans Revenue Boost In ’13

CEO Dunia Shive says that it has deals with six video providers coming up for renewal between July and the end of next February. She also says the company will expand its station holdings “as they make sense.”

Belo Corp. CEO Dunia Shive said today that between this July 1 and Feb. 28, 2014, retransmission consent deals with six multichannel video services covering 40% of the subscribers in Belo’s TV service areas are coming up for renewal.

And it was safe to assume that retrans revenue would be up this year over last, when the company booked $69.4 million, she said in a call with securities analyists.

Belo is also currently negotiating a new affiliation agreement with NBC for the company’s four network affiliates, and new reverse compensation requirements could be retroactive to the Dec. 31, 2012, the expiration date of the previous contract, Shive said without divulging what the company is currently paying in reverse comp to any of its networks.

Shive also said that Belo will consider adding stations to its portfolio in the year ahead “as they make sense.”

“Just because we haven’t [bought new stations] to date, doesn’t mean we won’t,” she said.

Belo’s NBC affiliates are KING Seattle; KGW Portland, Ore.; KTVB Boisie, Idaho; and WCNC Charlotte, N.C.

BRAND CONNECTIONS
