Loftus began his career as a teacher and coach, before his broadcasting career started in Los Angeles radio in 2002. He made the leap to television in 2007 as a feature reporter for KMPH Fresno, Calif.

Loftus graduated from the University of Iowa, where he earned a B.A. in English, and a Master of Arts in teaching from Loyola Marymount University.
