In a bold move, taking her landmark syndicated show off the air, Oprah Winfrey is moving to a larger stage — her own cable network, OWN. The Oprah Winfrey Network, backed by Discovery, launches on Saturday, Jan. 1, a day normally reserved for parades and football. Here's a roundup of some of the pre-premiere coverage.

How successful can this network be when, for example, Comcast (in Portland, OR) has it on their 3rd tier rather than a basic service.

“a larger stage”. Hmmm. No pun intended there…. I’m not certain a cable network that isn’t first tier as Barry mentions is better than 99% clearance on OTA affliates. The big bonus is that she keeps all the cash. We’ll see if audiences and advertisers follow.
