Disney-ABC Has Tyra Banks Talker In Works

The new syndicated show featuring the host of CW's America’s Next Top Model would debut in fall 2015.

Disney-ABC is developing a talk show with Tyra Banks for fall 2015, the company confirmed today.

The syndicator, whose first-run talk show Katie will end its run next month, is looking to replace that show in fall 2015. This year, in its place, ABC stations will air shows such as Disney-ABC game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Banks has been hosting CW’s primetime reality show America’s Next Top Model since 2003. She had a Warner Bros. talk show that aired in syndication from 2005 to 2009 and on the CW until 2010.

“Tyra is truly unique in that she is both aspirational and extremely relatable to women of all ages,” added Lisa Hackner, EVP of daytime and syndicated programming at ABC Entertainment Group, in a statement. “With an extraordinary social media following and legions of fans built over her years on television, Tyra is more relevant than ever. She is the ideal personality to infuse lifestyle content with fresh energy, humor, and the practical information the daytime audience craves.”

Wow. Do they have anyone in development or are they just pulling cancelled shows out of a hat?

I worked for several years at a station that had her original talk/variety show. We did some serious editing of the content. Her contract managers did not like it but we were forced to do it based on the desires of the station manager. He had an outright ban on anything that had to do with Snoop Dog. Tyra had him on the show numerous times during the run and we would just edit out complete segments minus the barters. But we couldn’t edit the teases without making it look choppy. So Tyra would say, “Just ahead, Snoop Dog” but it would go to barters, then our break, then the segment after Snoop Dog. Another segment we totally removed was the one where she gives everybody a bottle of Vaseline covered in fake diamonds. I can’t remember who sold it but it wa supposed to be the miracle skin treatment for women, especially the bosom area. We notified the station manager about it and he said, “Kill the entire segment, I don’t want that on my air.” You think it was just a casual thing but a guy was fired over it. The assistant program director was supposed to log all shows for content and he missed on segment that hit two biggies of our manager. It had to do with global warming and a junk scientists who was a guest. There was no forgiveness for not catching that and issuing edit instructions. We didn’t know that it was one of his pet peeves so we were not faulted. I mean we had audio cut cues on a log just to edit out things on Tyra’s shows that passed the syndicator’s standards and practices office. We would bring the master volume down on specific words the manager didn’t want to air. But letting a junk scientist on our air was unforgivable and the assistant PD was fired. He walked out with a box of his belongings and a note was posted that if he ever returned, we were to call the police.

As Katie ends, makes more sense to start this Fall 2014 instead of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. That way they can get ahead of cancelling it and find a better option to start in 2015. Starting in 2015 only delays the inevitable.

I am a young woman in college and I consider Tyra Banks to be a fantastic role model. I watched her the Tyra Banks Show growing up and fell in love with her positive messages toward girls, young and old, about body image, healthy eating, and being confident in who you are. I look forward to her new show! 🙂
