Dow Edges Up 21 Points, Nasdaq Climbs 13

Stocks were able to shake off an early loss to end mostly high Monday. Shares of Starwood Hotels and Valeant Pharmaceuticals both rose. 

Stocks ended mostly high Monday after shaking off an early loss.

Starwood Hotels jumped 5% after agreeing to a new offer to be acquired by Marriott International.

Valeant Pharmaceutical rose 7% after its CEO stepped down. Activist investor Bill Ackman will join the troubled company’s board.

Homebuilders lost ground on news that home sales fell last month.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 21 points, or 0.1%, to 17,624.

 

BRAND CONNECTIONS

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose two points, or 0.1%, to 2,051. The Nasdaq composite climbed 13 points, or 0.3%, to 4,808.

 

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.92%.
