Gannett Claims Olympics Viewing Trifecta

The group owner says it has the top three stations in primetime viewership of the games in the adults 25-54 demo and its NBC affils also comprise four of the top five and six of the top 10.

Three Gannett-owned television stations, KUSA Denver (DMA 17), KARE Minneapolis (DMA 15) and WXIA Atlanta (DMA 9), are the top-rated NBC affiliates for the 2012 Summer Olympics among the key advertising demographic of adults 25-54 during primetime. KUSA is the No. 1 rated NBC station and is averaging a 51 share in primetime.

Gannett said three other of its NBC affiliates placed among the top 10 highest-rated local television stations in the 25 largest television markets, according to Nielsen LPM overnight ratings. Gannett’s KSDK St. Louis is fifth. KPNX Phoenix and WKYC Cleveland tie for sixth.

Overall, Gannett stations take four of the top five and six of the top 10 spots. Ratings are up significantly from the Beijing Games, it says.

“NBC’s coverage of the London Games is bringing viewers some of the most extraordinary moments in Olympic history, ultimately making them the most watched and most social Games ever,” said Dave Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting.

“Working with NBC, our stations are doing terrific work bringing home the stories of our athletes throughout the communities we serve. We are engaging with our consumers across every platform — broadcast, mobile, online and in social media. As a result, we are seeing the relationship between social media and television viewing more fully realized with viewership reaching historic levels,” Lougee added.
