Gray’s KWTX Adopts Sony Media Backbone

KWTX Waco, Texas (DMA 88), plans to go on-air in March with Sony’s Media Backbone Production System, becoming the third Gray Television-owned station to do so in the past 12 months.

The CBS affiliate joins co-owned KXII, Sherman, Texas, and KBTX, Bryan, Texas, to adopt the system to streamline news production workflow and enhance its ability to get content shot, edited and sent to air faster and more efficiently. Gray’s WITN Greenville, N.C., also plans to integrate the system this year.

Media Backbone, which is used for ingesting and moving video onto various distribution platforms, in addition to enabling simultaneous access to content by more than one person, is designed to increase newsroom efficiency and allow operators to use metadata more effectively, making searching for and archiving content easier.

In addition to the Media Backbone system, Gray is also using Sony’s Video Journalism Backpack field production and editing package for broadcast video journalists. WCTV Tallahassee, Fla. (DMA 106), is the latest station to use the all-in-one setup specifically designed for one-man-band journalists.
