Hearst TV Creates Dir. Of Veteran Recruiting

Dave Kaylor, WCVB Boston’s director of engineering, and a Navy veteran, will lead the expansion of the company’s efforts to recruit veterans for open positions throughout the Hearst TV station group.

Dave Kaylor, longtime director of engineering at Hearst Television’s WCVB Boston, has been appointed to a newly created assignment as director of veteran recruiting for Hearst Television.

The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today by Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television Inc. president.

In this new role, Kaylor — who served for four decades in the U.S. Navy, most recently as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve — will assist Katherine Barnett, Hearst Television VP of human resources, with the expansion of the company’s efforts to recruit veterans for open positions throughout the Hearst TV station group.

“Dave’s exemplary military service, experience and relationships have been an excellent resource for Katherine and our stations as we have increased our outreach to veteran job applicants,” Wertlieb said. “Many of these applicants are well qualified for open positions not only in engineering, but in all of our stations’ departments, including sales and news. We are very fortunate to have Dave leading this effort to broaden our company’s participation in the important work of hiring our military service men and women as they transition to civilian careers.”

As director of engineering since 2003 at WCVB, Kaylor directed the station’s successful launch of news and other local programming in high definition.  He previously was director of engineering for WISN, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, and, before that, as news operations manager at KCRA, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Sacramento, Calif.

He began his broadcast television career at WFLA Tampa, Fla., rising from engineering maintenance technician to news operations manager.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Before entering broadcasting, Kaylor served the U.S. Navy for five years as a submarine atmosphere control technician.  He holds a B.A. in social sciences from the University of South Florida and an M.A. in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.

A prolific writer, Kaylor earned two Emmy nominations in his civilian career, and has been honored for journalism in his military career. As a public affairs specialist, he was awarded a Chief of Information Merit Award for best news story, U.S. Navy, in 1999, and he received a Thomas Jefferson Award for best news story, Department of Defense, in 2000. His writings and photography have been published in more than 25 Navy and Department of Defense publications.

Kaylor served in active duty twice, most recently in Kabul, Afghanistan. For his service there, he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from military service in 2013, 40 years after he first enlisted, as the Senior Enlisted Leader for Naval Reserves Navy Central Command, Commander U.S. Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain.
