Hearst TV SVP Phil Stolz To Retire Next Year

The TV group executive will leave next February, capping a 40-year television career. He will serve as an adviser to the company in the interim. Jordan Wertlieb, EVP, and Frank Biancuzzo, SVP, will assume management oversight of the 10 stations currently in Stolz’s supervisory portfolio.

Philip M. Stolz, who since 1998 has been senior vice president of Hearst Television, with executive oversight of many of the Hearst Television stations, will move to an advisory role in advance of his retirement from the company on Feb. 1, 2013. The transition culminates a 40-year career in the broadcast industry.

The announcement was made today by David J. Barrett, president-CEO of Hearst Television Inc.

During the transition period, Stolz will assist Jordan Wertlieb, EVP, and Frank Biancuzzo, SVP, as they assume management oversight of the 10 stations currently in Stolz’s supervisory portfolio. Stolz will also consult with Barrett on broader operating issues.

“Phil has had an outstanding 25-year career with Hearst Television,” Barrett said, “and he’s been a key senior executive through our period of significant expansion from a seven-station television group to our current 29-station group covering 18% of U.S. TV households. Phil’s insightful understanding of television news, programming, sales and community engagement, coupled with his sound business judgment, has contributed enormously to the success and positive reputation of our company. And he has always had a sharp eye for talent of every kind, helping us to populate our ranks with so many outstanding colleagues. We are indebted to Phil for his superb contributions.”

Stolz joined Hearst in October 1987 as VP-GM of WDTN Dayton, Ohio, following GM positions at WQOW Eau Claire, Wis., and KCRG Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1991 Stolz moved to Baltimore as the VP-GM of WBAL. Stolz began his broadcast career at WXOW La Crosse, Wis., as an account executive and sales manager.

Stolz is a member of the CBS affiliate board, and a former member of the NBC Affiliate Board. He also served as chairman of the NBC Affiliate Board’s News Committee which, among other duties, oversaw the NBC affiliates’ involvement in the NBC Newschannel service. In that role, Stolz was instrumental in the creation of a governance agreement creating a new level of partnership between NBC and its affiliates.
