Humphries Returns To Run Hearst’s WYFF

Hearst brings John Humphries back to the Greenville, S.C., NBC affiliate to succeed John Soapes as president and general manager. He had an earlier tour there as director of sales.

John L. Humphries, who since 2012 has been president and general manager of WGAL, Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate in Lancaster-Harrisburg-Lebanon-York, Pa., has been named president-GM of WYFF, the company’s NBC affiliate in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C.-Asheville, N.C. (DMA 37). 

The appointment, effective July 1, marks a return for Humphries to WYFF, where he served for six years as director of sales prior to moving to WGAL.

Humphries succeeds John R. Soapes, who recently was named President-GM of WESH and WKCF, the Hearst NBC and CW affiliates, respectively, in Orlando, Fla. Humphries’ successor at WGAL will be announced at a later date.

Prior to WGAL, Humphries oversaw sales for WYFF, WYFF4.com, WYFF 4 Mobile and the digital multicast channel WYFF 4.2.  Before joining Hearst in 2006, Humphries was general sales manager for WBTV Charlotte, N.C.

Previously, he was general sales manager and station manager at WSPA-WASV Greenville-Spartanburg market. He began his career at Charlotte’s WSOC, initially as a production specialist and later as a sports reporter and anchor, before making the jump to sales at WSOC as an account executive and, subsequently, local sales manager.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in speech from Appalachian State University, in Boone, N.C., for which he has served on the Alumni Council.

Among Humphries’ industry associations, he serves on the board of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters and has served on the board of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association as well as on the Television Bureau of Advertising  Sales Advisory Committee.
