Ion To Rechristen WQEX As WINP

The new calls for what's now WQEX Pittsburgh are just part of Ion's effort to transform the ShopNBC affiliate to its own network O&O with Qubo and Ion Life on subchannels.

Goodbye WQEX.

Once it closes on its $3 million purchase of the Pittsburgh station from noncommercial WQED, Ion Media plans to “relaunch” the station as WINP — WIN Pittsburgh Over — as it replaces its ShopNBC programming with the Ion network and adds two multicast channels, Qubo and Ion Life.

“Ion has experienced success in recent years by re-energizing and re-imagining broadcast stations as a way to bring entertainment and education to all families and age groups across the country,” said Brandon Burgess, CEO, Ion Media Networks, in a prepared statement.

“We look forward to better serving the local Pittsburgh community with Ion’s broad spectrum of high quality and affordable programming, with something for everyone in the family.”

News that Ion had purchased the station emerged yesterday in an FCC filing, in which WQED asked the agency to approve the deal.
