Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who will announce his presidential campaign later this month, is preparing to launch a TV ad in New Hampshire — backed with a substantial buy — that hints at how he’d distinguish himself from the crowded pack of Republican candidates.

The one-minute ad begins with a clip reel of Kasich’s opponents, including real estate magnate Donald Trump. It then cuts to a voice-over asking, “Hey, what about us?” Kasich then speaks straight into the camera highlighting his blue-collar background and efforts to resuscitate Ohio’s economy.

The two-term governor talks about his father, a mailman. “I learned something from my father,” he says. “Do your best to look out for other people.”

Kasich then discusses balancing the state’s budget and creating jobs. “We turned Ohio around,” he says.

The governor plans to make New Hampshire a centerpiece in his push for the Republican nomination. According to a media tracking source, Kasich’s political action committee, New Day for America, has purchased almost $500,000 in TV time from stations in the Boston, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire, media markets as of Wednesday afternoon, to air the commercial. The advertising flight is set to begin on Thursday and end on July 13.

In the ad, Kasich also highlights his career on Capitol Hill as chairman on the House Budget Committee and as a member of the Armed Services Committee.

The Ohio governor, who will formally announce his candidacy on July 21, has hinted that he will make a major push in the Granite State. Speaking to reporters in Washington on Tuesday, Kasich spoke extensively about the state, which has a history of favoring independent-minded candidates.

“You know, the thing about New Hampshire that’s interesting: They look you square in the eyes, and to quote a former president, ‘All the way deep into your soul,’ to figure out if you’re the kind of figure that they like. And so that’s really what it gets down to.”
