Judge Judy’s 18th Season Posts Strong Debut

Judge Judy experiences 13% increase over last year's debut, and was the week's highest rated syndicated show in the week ending Sept. 15. Talk shows also continued to post strong ratings. Dr. Phil was No. 1 in households with a 12% bump over last year. Live with Kelly & Michael was up 13%.

Judge Judy kicked off its 18th season in the week ending Sept. 15 with a 13% increase over last year’s debut that beat all other first-run syndicated shows. Judy was the highest rated syndicated show for the week.

Talk shows continued to post strong ratings with many of them launching new seasons. Dr Phil was No. 1 in households with a 12% bump over last year. Live with Kelly & Michael, in its second week of the new season, was up 13%.

Ellen, which ranked No. 1 in the core women 25-54 demo, kicked off its 11th season with its best-ever premiere week rating, ranking No. 3 in households, up 4% from last year.  Dr Oz hit a five-week high. Katie scored its best rating since the February sweep to rank No. 5 among talk shows. Steve Harvey was up 17% from last year while Rachael Ray achieved a six-week high.

In prime access, several magazines saw sharp rating spikes although some other shows ran into numerous preemptions for U.S. Open Tennis and other sports. Extra was preempted 68 times during the week. Access Hollywood had the biggest week-to-week increase in the category.

Among game shows, Who Wants to be a Millionaire with new host Cedric the Entertainer, was up 5% over last year.

Meantime, in late night, the rookie Arsenio Hall averaged a 1.1 national rating and a 0.8 among adults 25-54. In that demo, it beat most other late night talk shows, except ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel (0.8) and NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (1.0).

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In daytime, The Test premiered with a 0.6 household rating.

Also in daytime, national ratings for rookie Bethenny’s first week are being reprocessed by Nielsen. Last week in metered markets, Bethenny averaged a 1.0/3 in households. The first national rating for Queen Latifah is scheduled to be out next week.

The week’s top nationally rated talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Ellen (1.7,  up 70%  from the prior week)
  • Dr. Phil (1.6, up 7%)
  • Live with Kelly and Michael (1.5, up 25%)
  • Maury (1.2, down 8%)
  • Dr. Oz (1.2, up 9% )
  • Katie (0.9, up 29%)
  • Steve Harvey (0.8, up 14%)
  • Rachael Ray (0.8, unchanged)
