Judy Gavels Her Way To Syndie’s Top Spot

The courtroom leader is the highest rated first-run show in syndication for the week ending April 24. It was also a good week for Dr. Phil.

For the first time this season, Judge Judy (CTD) took over as the undisputed No. 1 show in first-run syndication, edging out Wheel of Fortune (CTD) and beating Oprah (CTD) by 46%.

Elsewhere, shows were narrowly mixed in the week ending April 24, which was the last full week before the May sweep.

Judy scored a 6.7 rating, topping Wheel’s 6.5 and the soon-to-conclude Oprah’s 4.6. Winfrey, who is ending her original episodes on May 25, was down 2% from the prior session to a 4.6 in her sixth-from-last week.

Talk Shows

On the positive side, second-place Dr. Phil (CTD) highest its highest rating in seven weeks, scoring a 2.8, which was up in 8% households and up 14% among women 25-54. The biggest draw for Dr. Phil was an episode on out-of-control children, which sent ratings up 23% to a 3.2 on April 19. Live with Regis and Kelly (Disney-ABC) was flat at a 2.5; Maury (NBCU) tacked on 5% to a 2.3; Dr. Oz (Sony) inched ahead 5% to a 2.2; and Ellen DeGeneres (WBDTD) was unchanged at a 2.0.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Among courtrooms, Judy improved 2% from the week before to a 6.7; Judge Joe Brown (CTD) held steady at a 2.6; People’s Court (WBDTD) was flat at a 1.8; Judge Mathis (WBDTD) gained 7% to a 1.6; Judge Alex (Twentieth) and Divorce Court (Twentieth) also added 7% to a 1.5; while Judge Jeanine Piero (WBDTD) trailed with an unchanged 0.9.

Magazine Shows

The magazine rack was solid as ratings for every show in the category held firm week to week. Leader Entertainment Tonight (CTD) clocked another 3.7, followed by Inside Edition (CTD) at a 2.9; TMZ (WBDTD) at a 2.1; Access Hollywood (NBCU) at a 1.9; The Insider (CTD) at a 1.6; and Extra (WBDTD) at a 1.5.

Game Shows

Among gamers, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) skidded 4% from the previous frame to a 6.5; Jeopardy (CTD) dropped 3% to a 5.7; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) picked up 4% to a 2.4; Who Wants to be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) lost 4% to a 2.3; and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Twentieth) rose 10% to a 1.1.

First-Run Freshmen

Swift Justice with Nancy Grace (CTD) led the newcomers for the 32nd consecutive week, despite slipping 6% from the week before to a 1.6. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Twentieth) moved into second place, gaining 11% to a 1.0 and overtaking Nate Berkus (Sony), which remained at its season low 0.9; Judge Karen’s Court (Litton) and America’s Court with Judge Ross (Entertainment Studios) were unchanged 0.8 and 0.4, respectively.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Among off-net sitcoms, Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) and Family Guy (Twentieth) were flat at 7.0 and 4.4, respectively. My Wife and Kids (Disney-ABC) advanced 7% to a 3.2; George Lopez Show (WBDTD) dipped 3% to a 2.8; Everybody Loves Raymond (CTD) rallied 4% to a 2.7, while Seinfeld (Sony) sank 11% to a 2.5.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBCU) jumped 24% from the week before to a new season high 4.1 and opened up a big lead among the off-net weekly hours. Criminal Minds (CTD) continued to slide, fading 10% to a 2.7 and 21% in the previous two weeks. Monk (NBCU) declined 4% to a 2.6; Bones climbed 9% to a 2.5; Without a Trace (WBDTD) was up 4% to a 2.4; Numbers (CTD) was off 8% to a 2.2; and The Closer (WBDTD) dropped 13% to a 2.0.
