Media General promotes her from managing editor to succeed Dan Cates as news chief at the CBS-CW duopoly in Spartanburg, S.C.

Kelly Named News Director Of WSPA-WYCW
Karen Kelly today was named news director of Media General’s WSPA and WYCW, CBS and CW affiliates in Spartanburg, S.C. (DMA 37). She succeeds Dan Cates, who was named VP-GM of WJHL, Media General’s CBS affiliate in Johnson City, Tenn.
Since 2002, Kelly has been managing editor at WSPA. She joined WSPA in 1998 as news producer and was promoted to executive producer the same year.
She began her broadcast career as a producer at KLOR Springfield, Mo. She also worked at WHNS Spartanburg, where she played a key role in the launch of the station’s 10 p.m. newscast.
