Kidnap Victim Exclusive Drives ‘Dr. Phil’

The two-part interview with Michelle Knight sends Phil’s ratings up 16% in the week ending Nov. 10 to a new season high. A number of other shows also tied or topped their season-best ratings.

Ratings for Dr. Phil skyrocketed in the session ending Nov. 10, a week that included an average 5.5 million viewers for Phil’s two-part exclusive with “Miracle in Cleveland” kidnapping survivor Michelle Knight. Phil, which has been No. 1 in talk for a dozen weeks in a row, opened up its biggest lead over the field this season with its strongest ratings in more than two years.

Other talkers beside Phil posting new season highs were Ellen and Steve Wilkos, the latter of which will celebrate its 1,000th episode on Friday. Dr. Oz, Steve Harvey, Rachael Ray, Wendy Williams, Jerry Springer and The Doctors all matched their previous season highs.

Harvey and Wendy had the largest year-to-year gains with increases of 38% and 40%, respectively.

Among the talk show newcomers, Queen Latifah finished in first place for the seventh time after being reprocessed in the prior week, while Bethenny equaled its season high in households, led all rookies among women 25-54 and won its time periods among women 18-34 in three of the top six markets.

In access, Entertainment Tonight set the pace among magazines with a new season high, while Extra had the sharpest week-to-week improvement and grew 13% from last year. Access Hollywood also jumped 13% year to year.

At the head of the overall syndication list, Judge Judy notched a new season high.
