KNBC L.A. Expands Weekend Newscasts

The NBC O&O adds 5 p.m. newscasts on Saturday and Sunday and 30 minutes to its Sunday 11 p.m. news.

NBC-owned KNBC Los Angeles (DMA 2) announced today that it will expand its weekend newscasts, beginning Feb. 9. The station will add a 30-minute 5 p.m. newscast to the Saturday and Sunday lineups, and increase the 11 p.m. newscast by 30 minutes on Sunday evenings, for a total increase of 1.5 hours of weekend news coverage.

Robert Kovacik and Kathy Vara, who currently co-anchor the station’s 6 and 11 p.m. weekend newscasts, will also co-anchor NBC4 News at 5PM on the weekends.

“The expansion of our newscasts give us a chance to tell more stories and cover events that happen on weekends,”  said Todd Mokhtari, KNBC’s VP of news.  “The added time slots give our viewers more options for getting breaking news, local information and weather all weekend long.”

News on Sunday night for an hour? Good for the sales department. I imagine the last 30 minutes will be wall-to-wall sports rather than news.
