KSAZ Online News Service Eyes 24 Hours

The Phoenix Fox O&O online news service Fox 10 News Now is offering 7-8 hours of streaming news and features each day. The plan is to increase staff and offer 24-hours-a-day programming.

Taking the concept of live streaming to the next level, Fox O&O KSAZ Phoenix has launched an online news service slated to become a 24-hour nonstop serving the country’s 11th largest market.

Fox 10 News Now, which launched in November 2014 on the station’s website and You Tube channel, currently streams for roughly seven hours a day, featuring live programming produced and hosted by digital journalist Samia Kahn, says VP-News Director Doug Bannard.

In addition to newscasts emanating from a studio in the KSAZ facility, Fox 10 News Now features live coverage of events such as last week’s sentencing of convicted murderer Jodi Arias. The channel’s eight hours of coverage that day drew a total of 73,000 viewers, according to a Fox rep.

Fox 10 News Now also features guest interviews, KSAZ talent and live online chats with viewers, Bannard says.

“It’s no secret people are clamoring for information on all kinds of devices,” says Bannard, who has spent the last six months or so building out the service. “We wanted to do something that would address that demand.”

While stations around the country have pushed news onto new platforms in a variety of ways — streaming TV newscasts, producing Web-exclusive content and airing news on their subchannels, among others — Fox 10 News Now is far more aggressive than most, and soon will expand.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Bannard says he plans to increase his staff of dedicated digital journalists, and will continue to grow the channel’s programming schedule accordingly — eventually up to 24 hours.

The concept of Fox 10 News Now originated at KSAZ. It is the only Fox O&O to offer this sort of channel.
