How does turning in vhf channel 7 (WMKE) benefit the wireless companies? Free it up for other TV use?

What a sham for investment groups to buy stations only to sell off the spectrum and reduce the number of choices available to OTA viewers. If they don’t want to be broadcasters they should not be permitted to buy stations.
