WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Magazines Among The Few Up Syndies

The week ending June 9 saw few show escaping from the summer Nielsen blahs. Among the first-run shows able to claim ratings gains from a week earlier were Dr. Oz, Wendy Williams, Inside Edition, TMZ, Extra, Judge Judy and Wheel of Fortune.

Judge Judy, just named the top courtroom program at the Daytime Emmy Awards, was the highest rated show in first-run syndicatin for the sixth week in a row and opened up a wide lead on the field in the week ending June 9. But many other top-tier shows lost ground as PUT levels wilted in the June heat.

On the other hand, several magazines saw rating increases with their coverage of Paris Jackson’s shocking suicide attempt, despite numerous preemptions for coverage of French Open tennis on NBC.

Extra had the largest year-to-year improvement in the category, growing by 7%, while mag leader Entertainment Tonight rose 3% from last year at this time. The only show in the genre to advance by double digits week to week, however, was the new OMG Insider Weekend, which jumped 13% from the previous frame.

In daytime, the season’s top talker, Dr. Phil, was in reruns all week and, for a second straight session, landed in a first-place tie with Live with Kelly and Michael. Live, which has been on a ratings roll since Michael Strahan replaced Regis Philbin, was up 9% from last year.

Meanwhile, Ellen, which just won its seventh Daytime Emmy for best entertainment talk show, surged 29% from last year at this time, the biggest year-over-year gain of any talker by far.

The week’s to nationally rated in the women 25-54 demo were: Ellen (1.6 demo rating, down 6% from the week before); Dr. Phil (1.5, unchanged), tied with Live (1.5, unchanged); Maury (1.2 -8%), tied with Dr. Oz (1.2 +20%); freshman Steve Harvey (0.9, +13%), tied with veteran Wendy Williams (0.9 +13%); and newcomer Katie (0.8, unchanged).
