Maria Stephanos Joins WCVB As Evening Anchor

Maria Stephanos joins Hearst-owned ABC affiliate WCVB  Boston (DMA 8) as evening anchor beginning Thursday, Feb. 4.

A Massachusetts native with more than 25 years of journalism experience as an anchor and reporter in New England, Stephanos will co-anchor NewsCenter 5 at 7 and 11 p.m. with Ed Harding, chief meteorologist Harvey Leonard, and sports anchor Mike Lynch.  Stephanos will also anchor the soon-to-be-launched The 10 O’Clock News on WCVB’s MeTV Boston subchannel.

Heather Unruh, who continues as co-anchor of NewsCenter 5 at 6 p.m., will join Ed Harding as co-anchor of NewsCenter 5 at 4:30 p.m.  In addition, she will expand her medical coverage as WCVB’s medical reporter.

Stephanos joins WCVB Channel 5 from WFXT Boston  where she was a news anchor and reporter for nearly 18 years. Before that, she was a reporter at WJAR Providence, R.I. She began her career as a statehouse reporter working for several stations including WBUR-FM Boston.  She has also reported for several NPR stations and WCBS Radio and WABC Radio in New York. 

Stephanos is a graduate of Emerson College in Boston where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mass communications.

So much for the NBC Boston rumors.
